| | Lets be honest...you want to put it in your window And we want you to put it in your window
What a great trip - it's always great to see the folks. Our trip took an unexpected turn when Dave referred Trotsky and I to this article.
Three protesters from the Calvary Bible
Church in Midway stood in the rain in front of the store, holding signs
asking customers to boycott the company.
Pastor Roy Crane said the protesters want residents to boycott the
store because Walgreens donated $100,000 to the 2006 Gay Games and
fired four pharmacists in Illinois for refusing to sell the
"morning-after" pill.
The
"Gay Agenda" they say. Now, let me point something out...in times of
slavery, it was the "Black Agenda", and why not? It was easy to quote
verses from the bible in support of slavery. Next, in the early 20th
century, it was the "Women's Agenda"; once again with cited verse from
a presumably all-loving god's holy text. Now it's the "Gay Agenda".
Needless to say, Trotsky and I were unable to let this stand.
So, Sunday morning, we rose bright and early and headed over to Calvary Baptist Church in Midway Arkansas.

That's right boys and girls. My wonderful mother,
who holds a degree in Art, whipped us up some signs and we trotted off
to make a statement of our own. Shortly after our arrival, we were
greeted warmly by Pastor Crane.

It
quickly became evident that gluttony was not a sin at this particular
church, given the stature of Pastor Crane and his rather unfriendly
sidekick. We'll call him "Captain Plaid".
Pastor Crane informed us that, while he agreed with the bible verses we elected to cite (one of which was Leviticus 25:17: "Ye shall therefore not oppress one another")
that he simply could not support gay rights on the basis that
homosexuality was a sin. I can totally understand this...I mean, it's
not like jesus ever said "render to Caesar what is Caesar's" or
anything like that...

Pastor
Crane would return later sans Captain Plaid to demand that we set up a
delicious buffet and to give us a pamplet outlining how god has
forbidden homosexuality. But what could Trotsky be reaching for?

By jove! It's one of OUR pamplets! Try to read it before you injest it.

Yes,
you read my sign correctly: homosexuality is perfectly normal. It
occurs in virtually every other species on this planet, especially
during periods of overpopulation. Choosing to be ostracized in today's
society via homosexuality would be akin to choosing to be a jew in Nazi Germany, or choosing to be black in times of slavery.
All the same, it's completely irrelevent. The United States government cannot make any law with respect to any
religion. The idea of marriage is therefore a financial contract
between two people. Their sexual orientation should not forbid anybody
from entering into this contract, especially when recognized religions
in the United States will marry two members of the same gender. This
is religious discrimination and it is far more wrong than homosexuality
will ever be.

Of course, some dialogue was initiated by a few members of the devout. One such dialogue went as follows:
Lady: Would you two like to join us for service? Trotsky: Nope. We're good. Lady: I'm Pam...if I could show you in Romans where it says homosexuality is a sin, would you believe it then? JT: If I could show you where the bible says to kill people that work on Sunday, would you concede it's not true? Pam: Is that the old testament or the new testament? JT: The old testament. In Exodus. Pam: *condescending voice* Well, you see, we live under the new testament now. JT: So god changed his mind? Pam: He didn't change his mind. We lived under law then, but we live under grace now. David: So god changed his mind? Pam: No. Pam's Husband: *almost yelling* Jesus christ died for my sins and he died for yours too!
Pam and her husband promptly bolted for the church.
After about an hour and a half, the service let out...one last to chance to protest the bigotry out of them.

Homosexuality
is perfectly normal. Like heterosexual intercourse, it does not create
a victim. And the federal government could give two shits what your
god has to say about it. Want to oppress one another, despite the
bible's insistance that you don't? Put down the bible and tell me why
it's wrong.
Religion is beautiful until it makes you either hateful, or foolish, or both. Then it is poison.
Thanks to my mother for taking the pictures and making the signs!!! She joins the lovely Carly Ann on our photographer squad as our "on site photographer in Arkansas". Kudos mom! |
